headshot of claudiaPhilanthropy Ohio is trying a grand experiment this year: in place of our usual annual fall conference, we’re heading to The Ohio State University campus on July 9 for our inaugural Summer Institute that will provide deep learning experiences for all types of philanthropy: community and private foundations, individuals, corporate giving programs, United Ways, giving circles and government agencies.

Designed for both staff and trustees, we’ve secured 23 national experts and thought leaders to lead sessions that will dig deeply into content and practice, with something for everyone, regardless of years on the job, whether you’re located in an urban or rural area, have hundreds or millions to invest in your community.

First, it’s been developed to provide deep learning; rather than our typical conference breakout sessions where you skim the surface of a topic or issue in an hour, our Institute sessions are two hours in length. This will allow you to learn, ask questions and practice: it’s a focus on depth, not necessarily breadth.

Second, the sessions are led by nationally-recognized experts in their fields. We’re bringing in presenters from Grantmakers for Effective Organizations and BoardSource, from the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and the Kirwan Institute at OSU, to highlight just a few. So you can be sure that what you learn is really going to help you in your philanthropy practice. Dr. Manuel Pastor, a leading researcher and author on diversity at the University of Southern California, will give the keynote address at lunch.

Third, the Summer Institute is one day instead of three, allowing us to keep your costs down while maintaining the level of excellence you expect from Philanthropy Ohio learning events.
