CFMVThis week Philanthropy Ohio introduces the new president of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

Shari Harrell

Title & organization:
President of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley

Previous job:
Executive Director of the YWCA Warren

Why did you make the move?
I was not looking to make a move, but the opportunity at the Foundation was appealing for a number of reasons. First, the position with the Foundation serves the broader community rather than a specific segment of the community. It is also a different type of fundraising than what I was doing in the past. This job provides a new way for me to continue to make a difference in the community but from a very different perspective. I also have the opportunity to do more networking and community engagement work across sectors and issues than I could in my previous position.

What do you hope to accomplish?
I hope to continue to build the Foundation – growing the assets to reinvest in the community improving the quality of life and making the Valley better place to live and work.

What’s surprised you so far?
I don’t think there have been any big surprises yet.

What is it about your job that makes you excited to go to work?
It is all so new. I love taking on new challenges and working at the Community Foundation is very different from the direct service work I was doing before.

What’s on your MP3 player?
A mix of pop music.

What’s the last book you read?
The Light Between Oceans
